About Nordic Crypto

Nordic Crypto collects news about bitcoin, blockchain and crypto from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland in one place, in English, Norwegian (nynorsk and bokmål), Swedish, Danish, Finnish and Icelandic. It also keeps an events calendar, a who's who of the industry and its regulators, and an overview of courses and research at Nordic universities.

Who runs it

The site is run by Jørgen S. Notland (jQrgen), a developer in Oslo. He works on the Nexa blockchain at Bitcoin Unlimited, so stories about Nexa should be read with that in mind. The work is done with the help of artificial intelligence. Nordic Crypto is a sister project of Kryptonytt Norge, which covers Norway in Norwegian.

Editorial team

  • Editors: jQrgen and the Nordic Crypto editor. Both are human editors. They decide which stories are published, write the summaries of what each story says, and approve entries in the calendar, the who's who and the academia page. The work is done with the help of artificial intelligence.
  • Responsible person: Jørgen S. Notland (jQrgen) answers for the content.
  • Researcher: fetches headlines from the sources with the help of artificial intelligence, suggests stories, events and possible who's who entries, and puts them in a queue for the editors.

Nothing is published automatically. Every story, event and entry goes through the editor first.

How we work

We link to the original story and write our own summary in two to four sentences, first in English and then in the other site languages. The headline on a story card is in the language of the page. The source headline is shown underneath when it was written in another language. Quotes stay as the source wrote them. We do not copy article text and we do not get around paywalls. The translations of the site and of our summaries are made with the help of artificial intelligence and checked by the human editors (jQrgen and the Nordic Crypto editor); tell us if something reads wrong.

The who's who and the academia page only say what the sources say. Every entry and every link between entries points to its source. If we are unsure, we leave it out. People are only included in public professional roles (for example chief executive, director general or central bank governor), as described by their organisation or in the press. We never publish private information, health information or private financial information.

Photos of people are only shown when they are freely licensed (Wikimedia Commons, CC BY, CC BY-SA or CC0) or are official press photos offered for press use, always with credit. Otherwise we show initials. Organisation logos come from the organisation’s own website, press kit or Wikimedia Commons, are shown unaltered and only to identify the organisation, and do not mean that anyone endorses us. On a news story the outlet logo sits beside the source name when we have one from that same set. If we do not, only the name is shown. Links to people’s public profiles (website, X, LinkedIn, GitHub, Nostr, Mastodon) are only shown when the person has made them public themselves, and every link has a source.

Story cards and story pages do not show a picture. A small outlet logo sits next to the source name. We do not copy photographs from other newspapers. See Editorial ethics.

Kaupr (kaupr.io) is one of the news sources we follow. See the sources page.

Company entries in the who’s who and the industry map that were found through Kaupr’s Onchain Pages are checked against the company’s own website or a business register, and Kaupr is credited as a source.

How Nordic Crypto follows Vær Varsom-plakaten is set out on Editorial ethics.

Privacy

Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits and audience in aggregate. It does not use cookies, it does not identify you, and we do not sell that data. One analytics script loads from Cloudflare. Share buttons are plain links. We do not use advertising trackers.

Newsletter. The signup form on this site posts your email address to our own Cloudflare Worker. We store the address, the language you chose and the time in a private database (Cloudflare D1). We do not store your IP address, and the list is not on GitHub. You confirm by email before we send the newsletter. Unconfirmed addresses are deleted after 7 days. Every issue has an unsubscribe link. The list is used only for the Nordic Crypto newsletter. Until that form is switched on, this site does not ask for an email address. The newsletter page says that signup opens soon and links to the RSS feed, Telegram and X instead.

Language choice. When you open the English front page for the first time, the site picks a language for you. It asks our own small Cloudflare Worker which country your connection comes from; the Worker answers with a two-letter country code only (for example “NO”) and stores and logs nothing. Norway gives nynorsk (with bokmål one click away), Sweden Swedish, Denmark Danish, Finland Finnish (with Swedish one click away), Iceland Icelandic, and everywhere else English. If that lookup is not available, the site uses your browser’s language settings instead. A short-lived flag in your browser’s session storage (nc_auto) makes sure this happens only once per visit; it disappears when you close the tab.

One cookie. If you choose a language in the language menu, we store that choice in a cookie called nc_lang (valid for one year, only for this site). It contains only the language code and always wins over the automatic choice. Links straight to a language version are never redirected. Delete the cookie in your browser to undo the choice.

Light or dark. The site is light unless you switch to dark with the button in the header. That choice is stored in this browser’s local storage (nc-theme), only for this site, and it is never sent to us. The office screen mode uses the same setting.

Browser notifications. They stay off until you turn them on, with the button at the bottom of every page. The browser then creates a push subscription, and we send that subscription to our own Cloudflare Worker. We store only the subscription: the address the browser’s push service gave us, the two keys needed to encrypt a message to that browser, the language of the page, and the countries you picked. We do not store your name, your email address, your IP address, or what you read. The notification itself has no tracker. The same button turns notifications off and deletes the subscription. One publish sends one message, even when several stories go out together. Cloudflare Web Analytics still counts visits in aggregate, without cookies, and we do not sell that data. A later iOS app can read the same list of new stories as JSON. Apple’s push service (APNs) is not used.

Shoutbox. The chat is one shared room for every language. Messages are written by readers and are not editorial content from Nordic Crypto. The site does not translate them. While the chat is switched off, the front page and the chat page do not load it. When it is on, our own Cloudflare Worker stores the nickname, the message and a hash of the IP address. That hash changes every UTC day and is used only to limit abuse and to let a moderator hide or remove posts. The raw IP address is not stored. The nickname is kept in this browser’s local storage only. The chat does not set a cookie. Cloudflare Web Analytics still counts visits in aggregate, without cookies, and we do not sell that data.

Tips. The tip page does not open a public GitHub issue. The private inbox for Nordic Crypto is not open yet, so the page does not accept a tip and stores nothing. When the inbox is open, a tip goes to a private database. The editorial team reads it. That team includes human editors and an editor that is artificial intelligence. The artificial intelligence is not a human. We follow Vær Varsom-plakaten on source protection.

Columnist applications. The columnist application still opens a public issue on GitHub. Nothing from that form is stored on this website. Do not include health information, private financial information, or anything else you would not want public.

Not investment advice

Nordic Crypto is a news overview. Nothing here is investment advice, a recommendation to buy or sell, or an assessment of any company or crypto-asset. Crypto-assets can swing sharply in value and you can lose everything you invest. Check whether a provider is authorised with the national regulator or in ESMA's MiCA register before you use it.

Corrections and removal

If you find a mistake, such as a wrong role, a wrong link between entries, a wrong date or a summary that does not match the story, we fix it as quickly as we can. Corrections to content are noted on the entry.

If you appear in the who's who and want your entry or photo removed or changed, we remove it, even when the role is public. If you are a source or rights holder and do not want us to link to or summarise your stories, we take them out.

Report it by opening an issue at github.com/jQrgen/nordic-crypto/issues. Please do not write personal information in a public GitHub issue; ask to be contacted instead.

Write as a columnist

Nordic Crypto is looking for people who want to write columns on crypto, bitcoin and blockchain in the Nordics. Apply as a columnist. Our editor reads every pitch. A pitch does not guarantee publication, and a column is not investment advice.

The columnist form opens a public GitHub issue. A tip does not. We do not store the columnist application on this website. Share only a name and a contact method you are willing to have public, and no health information or private financial information.

How the rules are made

The page How the rules are made shows how EU crypto rules (MiCA, the anti-money-laundering rules and DORA) become national law and who supervises and enforces them in each Nordic country, with a source for every step.

Short video explainers for each country are at How crypto rules are decided. Until the films are rendered, each slot shows the title, the narrator notes and the sources. The sign-off is The Nordic Crypto team.

The crest is original artwork in a Nordic municipal heraldry style: an or shield, a gules eight-petal rosette, a sable raven, and two lions as supporters. It is not a national or royal arms. On the site the crest sits beside the name, aligned to the left. Files and colour tokens are on the logo and media kit page.

Source code and data

The published data is open: news (JSON), events (JSON), who's who (JSON) and academia (JSON). A versioned feed for apps and other tools, with news, newsletters and the rest of the public data, is documented at the data API. The code is MIT-licensed.
