EU and eight European countries sign Council of Europe protocol on confiscating criminal assets
Original title (Swedish): EU och åtta länder skärper kampen mot kryptobrott
The EU and eight European countries – Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino and the United Kingdom – signed an Additional Protocol to the Council of Europe's Warsaw Convention on money laundering and the confiscation of criminal proceeds on 14 October 2026, according to the Council of Europe and the European Commission. No Nordic country is among the signatories. According to the Commission, the protocol strengthens rules on freezing and confiscation, asset management, police and judicial cooperation and the prevention of money laundering, and Swedish site Kryptovalutaguiden reports that it explicitly covers crypto-assets and crypto service providers for the first time. The protocol is signed but not yet in force: the EU Council must still decide on concluding it, which also requires the consent of the European Parliament, and because it is a mixed agreement the EU member states must sign it as well.
